The 944 S2 was introduced in 1989 featuring the new 3 Litre version of the engine from the 944 S. The new 3 Litre DOHC engine was the largest capacity 4 cylinder engine of the period. The Power Output of the S2 was raised to 155kW an increase of 15kW over the previous 2.7 Litre 944 S and more than 30kW greater than the original 2.5 Litre 944.

With almost Perfect 50/50 Weight Distribution, the Balance, Poise and Handling of the 944 is Superb, a feature well recognised in road tests of the period. The 944 S2 is very much at home on the highways with its Long Legged Cruising Ability. It is also equal to meeting the challenges of a twisting mountain road where the Weight Distribution and the Road Holding shine through, the Rack and Pinion Steering is both Light and Precise, the 4 Wheel Discs giving Outstanding Braking Performance.
