1980 TRIUMPH TR8 CONVERTIBLE
LMCT 7819
SN:3453
FACTORY V8 – BLACK WEDGE
First Conceived Back in 1972, Two Years Before the TR7 was to be Introduced, the Research Team at Triumph were Already Testing and Prototyping with the New Platform and looking at the Possibility of Fitting a V8 Engine into the 4 Cylinder Engine Bay. It would take a Further 6 Years Until the Production V8 Variant of the TR7 was Introduced, the TR8 would also hold be the last in Triumph’s TR Range.
The Engine of Choice was Rover’s All Aluminium 3.5L V8, producing 133 BHP at a Weight of Just 170kg, Allowing the Harris Mann Designed Wedge to have a Highly Favourable Power to Weight Ratio.
In 1979 a Michelotti Redesign of the Original Body was Introduced, with the New Convertible (Drophead) Body Superseding the Coupe. Total Production figures are Unclear, However Most Sources Agree with ~2,750 Built.
Delivered New to the US, this Black TR8, with Complimentary Blue/Grey Interior Trim is a Solid Example of the Rare Model. The Combination of a Lightweight, ‘Rev-Happy’ V8 and a 5 Speed Manual Gearbox Provided Ample Period Performance, enough for the TR8 to be dubbed the English Corvette.
With Both an Easy to Erect, Matching Black Soft Top and Air-Conditioning this Wedge will be Comfortable All Year Around.
