A SPECIAL ORDER AUSTRALIAN LIGHTWEIGHT

Introduced at the 1975 Paris Motor Show the Ferrari 308 GTB was Designed by Leonardo Fioravanti, of Pininfarina to both Replace the 206/246 Dino (of His Design) and sit Alongside Bertone’s 308 GT4. The Initial Release saw Carrozzeria Scaglietti take the Unusual Step to Produce the New Ferrari’s Bodywork in Vetroresina (Fiberglass), a Lightweight Composite Material, thus Allowing the Total Weight of the 308GTB to be Just 1,050kg!

Underneath the Vetroresina Bodywork was a Tubular Chassis Supporting a Mid-Mounted Transverse 2927cc V8 Engine, Designed by Vittorio Jano, Equipped with Quad Weber Carburettors and Driven Through a 5 Speed Transaxle Gearbox.

Just 712 Ferrari 308 GTB Vetroresina’s were Built (Representing Just 3.44% of the “3_8” Range), with Ferrari Switching to Steel Bodies in July of 1977. The Later Steel Bodied 308 Hit the Scales Near 150kg Heavier, Affecting the Outright Performance of the Sports Car and Ultimately Reducing the Ferrari’s Lifespan Due to Corrosion Issues, as Ferrari Did Not Start using Galvanised Steel Untill 1983.

This Vetroresina GTB was Special Ordered in Rosso Barchetta, an Exceptionally Rare, Darker Shade of Red than the Ubiquitous Rosso Chiaro, by Mr W.J (Bill) Drever through W H Lowe. Mr. Drever’s Order was Completed in November of 1976 and Sent to Melbourne, where it was Registered ‘WD 611’.

Serviced From New by J.W Allan Automotive (Run by Ferrari Factory Trained Mechanic John Allan) for Mr. Drever, the 308 would Reach 25,593Km by Early 1982 when it was Sold to Graeme Lupton. Bought through a business owned by Graeme and his Brother Denis the GTB was Seldom Used due to ill health, and Remained in their Custodianship Until 2016 when it was Sold for Just the Second Time.

Now Offered For Sale for Just the Third Time, having Just Received a Complete and Extensive Engine Rebuild, Completed in August of 2019, this Special Order Vetroresina 308 has Travelled Just 45,325km and has had it’s First Service Since being Rebuilt in January 2020.

The Condition of this Low Kilometer, Rare and Desirable Ferrari is a Sight To Be Seen! The Interior is in Exceptional, Original Condition Including the Slow Slung Leather Seats, Factory Momo Leather Bound Steering Wheel, Original Eurovox Cassette Radio and Untouched Carpets.

The Only Deviations from Originality are, the Fitment of 16” Wheels, Replacing the Original 14” Examples (that have been Retained, Including Near New, Correct Michelin XWX Tyres, that will be Sold With the GTB) and the Fitment of Both a Battery Kill Switch and Remote Charging/Jump Starting Terminals for the Battery.
