FRESHLY RESTORED, UPGRADED & A LOAD OF FUN

The Midget’s linage started in 1959 with the launch of the Austin Healey Sprite, Over the years the Bug Eyes Disappeared, Engine Capacity Increased and an MG version was added. The MG Midget was differentiated from the Sprite by badges and more Up Market Trim, Badge Engineering at its Best. By 1968 the Engine Size had Increased to 1275cc, Carpets had replaced the rubber mats and the MG Midget had developed into a far more Powerful and Comfortable Machine, but had lost none if its Fun.

This 1967 Lake Green MkIII Midget was the 110th of the 1,184 MG Midgets Assembled at the BMC plant in Zetland, New South Wales. The lack of bumpers and Minator Alloy wheels suggest that this is a Midget that really means Business. Restored and Improved by one of Australia’s Premier Midget Experts/Restorers/Racers, Bob Rowntree, this Midget has been built to an outstanding, Fast Road specification.

Bob purchased this Midget around 15 years ago with the intention to build it for Targa Tasmania. To do this, the Midget was disassembled and the Bodyshell fully Rebuilt then finished in Lake Green, while the interior has been retrimmed in black vinyl, as original, but with more Comfortable later model Seats.

The restoration work ensures that this Midget looks great but it is the mechanical work that really sets it above most other Midgets. The capacity of the engine has been enlarged to 1380cc with Omega pistons, connected to the balanced Crankshaft by steel billet conrods driving a lightweight flywheel through a fully reconditioned Ribcase Gearbox to a suitably tall 3.7 differential. The 1380 A series breathes through 1 ½” SU carburettors into a fully gas flowed 5 Port Alloy Head with the timing controlled by a SW5 Camshaft from Swiftune in the UK, while the spark delivered by a 123 Programmable Ignition and the burnt gasses exit through the requisite LCB exhaust manifold to a high flow exhaust system. The Sump is Baffled, the rear Engine Plate is Alloy, the Radiator is Alloy, the Starter High Torque, the Clutch Uprated and the Engine is all held together by ARP Fasteners. This superb Midget is a delight to drive, perfectly tractable but also with plenty in reserve for when it is needed.

There would be little in life that could delight as much as taking this Midget on a brisk run through the hills on a Sunday morning, it would also put a huge smile on your face simply nipping out for a quick coffee.
