Introduced in April 1965, the Phase III BJ8 (3000 MkIII) was the last production 6 cylinder Austin Healey update. The BJ8 interior trim was a more luxurious standard than previous with a burr walnut veneer dash, wind up windows, and a ‘One Touch’ convertible hood with zip-out rear window. The performance from the 150hp 2912cc 6 cylinder engine was a far cry from the 90hp 2.6 litre 4 cylinder engine of the first Austin Healey, the 100 introduced in 1952.

This Healey was despatched to the USA when first built and exported from its last registered address in Palm Desert California, to Australia in 2002 where it was converted to right hand drive and restored in 2005/06. The lovely coachwork in Black over a Red flash is highlighted by 72 spoke, chrome wire wheels and gleaming brightwork. The beautifully re-trimmed original style Claret Red leather interior contrasts nicely and also features an optional Smiths heater, a wood rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel and a stunning Burl Walnut dash, complete with a BMC AM radio. The one Touch Hood, hood cover and tonneau cover are in original style Black vinyl.

Mechanically in very standard specification, the 2.9 litre straight six is supported by: a Lucas generator, points ignition, Lucas starter motor and twin 2” SU carburettors true to its original design, providing a true to period driving experience. Engine servicing is improved with a spin-on oil filter conversion.

The nicely restored BJ8, with accompanying history file, has the classic Big Healey feel, with its lusty 3 Litre 6 cylinder engine coupled to the 4 speed gearbox with overdrive, providing a reliable, comfortable sports car as well as effortless long legged cruising.
