FORD AUSTRALIA BUILT, TOP SPEC 390ci CRUISER

After Ford Australia’s 1965 retirement of the ‘Fairlane’ nameplate, the American Galaxie was introduced to the Australian market, as a CKD (Complete Knock Down kit) from Canada, to be assembled in Homebush New South Whales, to fill the gap, and to provide Ford enough time to tool up for the upcoming ‘All Australian’ Fairlane of 1967 (ZA).

Built between 1964 (for the 1965 release) and 1968, a total of just 3,124 Galaxies were Australian assembled, all receiving Ford Australia ID plates, as well as Australian specific trims and fittings. Rather than utilising the American Galaxie dashboard as the basis for the right hand drive assembly, Ford Australia designed a new dashboard utilising the much higher specification 1962 Lincoln Continental instrument to insure it’s upmarket credentials.

Only built in the 4 door Sedan body style, the Australian Galaxie could be optioned with either a 225hp 289ci Windsor V8 or the 390ci FE Series Big Block V8, borrowed from the Thunderbird with a claimed output of 280 bhp.

This Galaxie is one of just 1,416 Australian built examples for 1965, and features the top specification 390ci big block V8, supported by an Autolite 4-barrel carburettor, matched to Ford’s Cruise-o-Matic 3-speed torque converter transmission with D1 and D2 settings, Servo assisted brakes, three link suspension and power steering. Priced at $5,570 when new, this Galaxie attracted a $2,200 premium to the 1966 V8 XR Fairmont!

Refinished in a stunning shade of Dark Blue Metallic, with a matching, locally made colour-keyed textured material interior in several shades of Blue featuring spacious bench seats front and rear, this Galaxie has recently undergone a significant amount of service work including the fitment of a new 3-core aluminium radiator, overhauling of the brakes, suspension and steering, as well as general maintenance, to allow you the best ownership experience, of a car once compared to the limousine comfort of a Rolls Royce.
