NO MIRAGE, A ‘SAHARA MIST’ RIVIERA

Buick, and GM’s First Foray into the Prestige Market, the Riviera was Graced by a Bill Mitchell Designed, Unique Bodyshell, Not Shared by any Buick’s Sister Companies. Quoted by Sergio Pininfarina as ‘One of the Most Beautiful American Cars Ever Built’ the Riviera is Considered a Styling Landmark.

The First Generation (1963-1965) Riviera was the Sole Product to be Built on GM’s New ‘E’ Platform, Until 1966 with the Introduction of the Second Gen Riviera, and the Front Wheel Drive  First Gen Oldsmobile Toronado, with the Sixth Gen Cadillac Eldorado Following just a year later, also available in only Front Wheel Drive Configuration.

True to the Original Pre-Production Design the 1965 Riviera was Fitted with Headlamps Hidden Behind Clamshell Doors, a One Year Only Styling Feature. Sold Standard with the 401ci Nailhead the ’65 Riviera was available with the ‘Gran Sport’ Performance Package Consisting of the 425ci ‘Super Wildcat’ V8, a More Aggressive Diff Ratio and More Rigid Suspension.

This Sahara Mist Example was Sold New to Mr. P.Day of Jacksonville, Illinois, with the Delivery Taking Place on the 9th of April 1966. Mr. P.Day Retained Ownership Until his Passing, at Which Time his Widow placed to Buick in Storage. In 2010 the Buick was Purchased by a Victorian Buick Enthusiast from the Widow and Imported into Australia.
