A TRUE FRENCH RALLY HERO

In the 1950’s the trend was developing for Small, Economical, Rear Engined family Cars. It had started with the VW Beetle, Renault had the 4CV, BMW were developing the 700, NSU, the Prinz, Hillman, the Imp and many more. Renault needed to replace the ageing 4CV and in 1951 Engineers began developing the Dauphine, by the time it was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1956, the Dauphine was one of the Most well Developed and Tested cars ever produced with over 2 million test kilometres completed.

As Carlo Abarth was to FIAT and John Cooper to BMC, so Amédee Gordini was to Renault. Since the 1950s, Amédee Gordini, known as ‘Le Sorcier’ for his almost magical ability to extract high power outputs from engines (particularly of small capacity), has been synonymous with performance versions of Renaults. In the late 1950s/early 1960s, his Competition-tuned Dauphines did Exceptionally Well in many forms of Motor Sport.

Their rallying victories were numerous and, indeed, a Dauphine Gordini was the First Car ever to Win outright the three most Important Rallies of the day: the Tulip Rally (1957), the Monte Carlo Rally (1958) and the Alpine Rally (1959) while also enjoying Great Success on the Racetrack. For several seasons the Dauphine dominated national 1,000cc classes around the world, Winning overall and class victories in such events as the Mille Miglia, Sebring 12 Hours and Tour de France.

This Renault Dauphine Gordini, finished in striking Gendarmerie Blue, was the subject of a 5 year, Nut and Bolt, rotisserie Restoration between 2014 and 2019. Prior to the restoration beginning, the Gordini hadn’t turned a wheel in over 30 years and was believed to have Travelled only 40,000 miles since it rolled out of the Flins-sur-Seine plant, just north west of Paris. Since completion the little Gordini has covered less than 2,000 miles. Being the Gordini version, this Dauphine has a 32mm carb and Higher-Compression Cylinder Head with Bigger Valves, giving 33% More Power than the standard model, along with a 4 speed Gearbox to make good use of the additional power.

The interior of the Gordini was in Such Good Condition that during the restoration it just needed a Good Clean and was able to be refitted. The Original Blue and White interior really sets off this Amazing, Rare Classic. The Renault drives very well, as it should and it’s hard not to imagine Yourself in a Classic Rally as you go through the gears.

Although survivors are few and far between, the Renault Dauphine owner is Well Catered for in Australia, with a Strong Club Scene and numerous All French Car Days around the country. This Gordini will allow you to own a little bit of Motoring History that’s fun to drive and Guaranteed to put a Smile on your Face.
