Following in the foot steps of Ken Costello, this 1977 MGB received a heart transplant by Melbourne’s ‘MG Workshops’, replacing the 1798cc 4 cylinder engine with the ubiquitous Rover all alloy V8, just as Ken had Done prior to MG producing the factory MGB GT V8 in 1973

Utilising the later, rubber bumper bodyshell, with it’s larger engine bay, the restorations/modifications undertaken on this MG B were comprehensive. Finished in the late 90’s, this particular MG entered the 1998 Targa Tasmania, and was featured in two magazines, the first comparing a hot 4 cylinder MG B to the V8, and the second comparing the V8 to the Bullet MX-5.

It was from these very articles that the MG would be sold to Mr. Bloodworthy in June 1999, when he dropped into MG Workshops to enquire on the cost of a V8 build. Purchased for $42,000 + government charges, Mr Bloodworthy traded his 1991 Ford Fairmont Ghia at a value of $7,000.

Mechanically, this MGB has a very well built 3.5L Rover V8, enlarged to 3.9L that is fitted with Motec controlled EFI system, free flowing exhaust manifolds, an alloy radiator and of course twin electric fans. The more than adequate power is transmitted through a 5 speed T5 BorgWarner gearbox to a BTR 2.9:1 LSD rear end running 14×6” 8 spoke Performance alloy wheels, with stopping power supplied by Volvo 4 pot calipers on ventilated discs up front and drum brakes rear.
