AWARD WINNING 3.2L BJ8 WITH RACK AND PINION!
This Austin Healey 3000 MkIII Phase 3 was built in November 1966, destined for the US, where it remained until 2012, when it was exported from California to Australia by The Healey Factory as a restoration candidate. Purchased by a Victorian Healey enthusiast, the BJ8 would be his 4th Healey spanning 35 years, built to encompass the most desirable upgrades he had admired over the years, while still retaining the BJ8’s spirit.
Stripped to a bare chassis, the MkIII received all the necessary rust repairs, while the chassis was trued and reinforced with extra suspension gussets. The front rails and the radiator supports were altered to accommodate rack and pinion steering, with a raked alloy radiator providing the required space.
Finished in the most desirable colour, Healey Blue Metallic, to an exceptional standard, the bodywork was completed to standard specification, including front and rear bumpers, with the exception of rally vents in the front guards, for increased airflow and the set of Lucas driving lights.
The Interior is finished in blue leather, with a dark blue cloth soft top, roof cover and tonneau, all trimmed by Abingdon Trimming. There are a number of subtle upgrades to the interior, including a Derrington wood-rimmed steering wheel, a rally style gear knob (with overdrive switch), a hinged full length centre console and the addition of a Voltmeter, Clock and Fuel Pressure gauge.
Mechanically the Healey is heads and shoulders above a standard BJ8, with vastly more power delivered from the fully rebuilt 3.2L engine, with DMD alloy head, DMD inlet manifold, extractor exhaust system, Scorcher electronic ignition, cable throttle, Hi-Torque starter motor, Spin on oil filter conversion and an alternator. To compensate for the improved performance, Koni shock absorbers have been fitted front and rear, while the front brakes have been uprated to 4 piston Wilwood calipers on vented rotors.
Passing it’s Engineering compliance on the 30th of Jan 2019, the BJ8 has now travelled just over 6,000 mostly country miles, including a trip to South Australian Lower Eyre Peninsula. Freighted to Perth for the 2019 Austin Healey National Rally, this BJ8 was awarded People’s Choice, a spectacular honour!
