44,000 MILE SURVIVOR HEMI

This stylish 1953 DeSoto Firedome sedan was sold new by Mansell Overand Ltd of New Westminster, British Columbia to John and Annie Alderson of South Burnaby, British Columbia on March 18th 1953 who retained it until 1965. The DeSoto still presents beautifully for its age, benefiting from some TLC following its addition to the Canadian car collection of Harold Watkins, around 1991 where it remained until 2016. Whilst in the collection it underwent various mechanical repairs (Main Bearings, Big End Bearings, Cam Bearings), body repairs and a Bare Metal Respray.

The DeSoto is now finished in Chrysler “Harbour Blue Metallic”, highlighted by the vast amount of sparkling brightwork. The cabin is very spacious and comfortable, featuring code “1” tropical /fountain blue cloth interior trim all being in excellent condition. The wonderful 50’s American dash and instrument panel has of course, an abundance of chrome instrument bezels, switches and heater control knobs. The door trims are highlighted with chrome strips, chrome door handles and chrome electric window controls.

The DeSoto Firedome sedan came equipped with the 276ci Firedome Hemi V8 engine (factory rated at 160bhp), the first time since 1931 DeSoto offered a V8 engine. The Firedome V8 engine was one of the first generation of the Chrysler Corporations V8 engines to feature Hemispherical combustion chambers which provided improved engine efficiency and performance capability. The optional fluid-Drive ‘TipToe Shift’ automatic transmission had 2 speeds but also a high and low range thereby resulting in a 4 speed transmission. The Firedome sedan featured electric power windows, front and rear quarter vent windows, and a 4-way power adjustable front seat. The factory power steering has been upgraded by replacing the original factory engine driven pump with an electric unit. The electrical system has also been upgraded to a 12V system with an alternator.

In 1993 the DeSoto was inspected by ‘Independent Automotive Appraisals Ltd’ who provided an inspection report and valuation, which accompanies the Firedome, as does a file containing historical receipts, registration and ownership details. Importantly the 1993 report confirms that the indicated odometer reading at the time was 40,526 miles and was believed to be correct. The odometer currently shows 43,647 miles, A true low mileage survivor.
