Following the successful introduction of Triumph’s 2.5L straight six in the TR5 & TR250, Triumph started production on the TR6 in late 1968, ready for the market in January 1969, with production continuing till July 1976. The TR6 was at the time, Triumph’s best selling ‘TR’, with a total production of 91,850 built, split between 9,449 150hp injected (CP), 4,463 124hp injected (CR) and & 77,938 104hp carburettored (CC & CF) examples.
Sold new by ‘Triumph Motor Company Ltd’ of London UK to Mr. G.Woolley, a dentist from Ferntree Gully Victoria, to Australian specification while he was studying in the UK, on the 27th of April 1972. The TR6 would make it’s way home to Australia soon after, gaining the Victorian registration ‘LXR990’ in 1974.
Retained by Mr. G.Woolley until June 2003, the Triumph would find it’s second owner after 30 years of single ownership. When purchased by Mr. N.Paterson, the TR6 had been parked up for quite some time, with evidence of a small engine fire likely being the cause.
The TR6 was stripped to a bare chassis and comprehensively restored, with chassis bracing added, rust removed and a complete and thorough re-paint. During the rebuild rear telescopic shock absorbers were fitted, along with Nissan driveshafts while the original fuel pump was uprated with a much more reliable Bosch unit.
To finish the restored Triumph the cabin was completely re-trimmed, now with high-backed Mazda MX-5 sports seats, a new soft-top and tonneau. The newly finished woodgrain dashboard is complemented by both a period correct MotoLita wooden steering wheel and a matching wooden gear knob.
